GOVERNMENT HOUSE,

HONGKONG. 26th April, 1918.

165

Sir,

I have the honour to inform you that

Mr. E. W. Carpenter, who is the Executive Engineer in charge of the construction of the new road from Tsun Wan to Castle Pesk, estimated to cost $215,000, is pushing forward the work with great energy and enthusiasm in order that it may be completed by the end of the year. He has also nearly completed the section of the road from Shamehuipo to Tsun Wan at a cost of about $125,000.

2.

It has been necessary for him to work since May, 1917, for long hours on nearly all Saturdays, Sundays and General Holidays, and he will continue to do so during this year in order to keep the contractors up to the mark and to ensure that the bridges, culverte, cuttings and banks are properly constructed. The work involves continual walking over the road trace for many miles and it is owing to Mr. Carpenter's fine physique and keenness that he is able to do this.

3.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

WALTER LONG, M.P.,
